A boxwood netsuke of a frog on rotten wood
By Mitani Goho, Aki Province, late 18th/early 19th century
The pimply-skinned frog climbing onto a large piece of striated rotten wood of pronounced grain, pushing itself up with one extended rear leg, its skin meticulously worked in ukibori, the slightly worn wood bearing a good patina and the eyes inlaid in dark horn, signed Goho. 6.3cm (2½in).
