A boxwood netsuke of a frog in bamboo
By Mitani Goho, Aki Province, late 18th/early 19th century
The frog attempting to lever itself out of a broken-off section of bamboo, the creature naturalistically carved with details in ukibori, the bamboo gouged with simulated worm holes with a small shoot emerging from one side, signed in ukibori and incised characters Dainitto San'yo Aki Goho Mitani Kotsu kore o sei (this was made by Goho Mitani Kotsu of Aki in the San'yo region of Great Japan). 4.7cm (1 7/8in).
