A boxwood netsuke of a toad emerging from a lotus pod
By Mitani Goho, Aki Province, late 18th/early 19th century
The toad emerging from the empty pod, which is simulated as split and broken in places, the trailing stalk carved in relief beneath, the skin of the toad partially covered with ukibori pimples and its eyes inlaid, signed Goho rojin saku (made by Goho in old age). 4.8cm (1 7/8in).
