A kurogaki (black persimmon) wood and boxwood netsuke of a frog on driftwood
By Seiyodo Tomiharu (1733-1810) and Seiyodo Gansui (1809-1848), Iwami Province, late 18th/early 19th century
The small boxwood frog squatting diagonally on the striated black persimmon section of rotting weathered wood, signed Tomiharu chokoku no kaeru o mochiite, Gansui futatabi kore o kizamu (recarved by Gansui using a frog carved by Tomiharu), with a wood tomobako storage box inscribed outside the lid Gansui futatabi kore o kizamu, Tomiharu chokoku no kaeru o mochiite zaimei (With signature of 'recarved by Gansui using a frog carved by Tomiharu'), the inside of the lid inscribed mizunoe-inu doshi hatsuaki Gado kan (examined by Gado in the early autumn of the mizunoe-inu year [1922]), with a seal Gado. 4.8cm (1 7/8in).
