A boar-tusk netsuke with a spider and ferns
By Seiyodo Bunshojo (1764-1838), Iwami Province, early 19th century
The tusk of pronounced curvature, carved towards the narrow end with a large spider, its body with etched markings and its legs undercut, delicately engraved with ferns above, signed Nihon San'indo Iwami Enokawa Seiyodo Bunshojo chokoku (Seiyodo Bunshojo carved this by the Eno River in the San'indo region of Japan) with a pot seal. 10.8cm (4¼in).
