A boar-tusk netsuke of a centipede and ferns with a poem
By Seiyodo Bunshojo (1764-1838), Iwami Province, early 19th century
Carved in low relief, the centipede clambering along the length of the tusk, the concave side decorated with ferns and a poem by Kawara no Sadaijin from the love-poem section of the Kokinwakashu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems), signed Iwami-shu (Iwami-no-kuni) Enokawa Seiyodo Bunshojo chokoku (carved by Seiyodo Bunshojo by the Eno River in Iwami Province). 12.2cm (4¾in).
