A kurogaki (black persimmon) wood koshira-e (mounting) for a wakizashi (short sword)

By Kakusen, Iwami Province, early 19th century
The saya (scabbard) carved to represent the bark of a tree, the tsuka (hilt) carved in relief with netting and seventeen tortoises, the tsuba (hand guard) of oval form carved as a tortoise, the fuchi (hilt collar) carved with pine needles, the kashira (pommel) in the form of a tortoise-shell, the kozuka (knife handle) with a fishing rod and box, the tsuba signed Kakusen, with a brocade bag and an unrelated wood storage box. Total length 49.5cm (19¼in). (3).

For an inro signed Kakusen and dated 1854, see G. Lazarnick, NIA, p.572. A conventional boar-tusk netsuke, giving his place of residence as the village of Sawara, is recorded by R. Bushell, CN, p.61, no.65. The Sawara referred to on this netsuke was probably located in Suo Province.
