An ebony netsuke of a tortoise
By Seiyodo Tomiharu (1733-1810), Iwami Province, circa 1797
Facing ahead, its head protruding, its legs drawn in for compactness, the eyes inlaid in horn, signed Sekiyo Enokawa Seiyodo Tomiharu kyonen rokujugosai shite chokoku (carved at the age of sixty-five by Seiyodo Tomiharu by the Eno River in Sekiyo). 5.6cm (2¼in).
