A boxwood netsuke of a frog on a pumpkin

Late 19th/early 20th century
The frog squatting on the pumpkin, facing ahead with an alert expression as if about to leap, the wood bearing a good patina and the eyes inlaid in horn, inscribed Masanao. 4.5cm (1¾in).

It has been suggested that this netsuke is by Masanao of Izumo, the work being somewhat in the style of Mitani Goho, although Shichida Makoto, a native of Shimane Prefecture (formerly Iwami Province) and author of numerous articles on Iwami netsuke, recorded that his signature is generally engraved in a more cursive style.
