By Fujii Katsuyoshi, possibly Iwami Province, late 18th/early 19th century
The large snail sliding over a pile of various leaves, their veins carved in delicate low relief, a cluster of nuts attached to a branch beneath, forming the himotoshi, the wood slightly worn and bearing a fine patina, signed Fujii Katsuyoshi saku (made by Fujii Katsuyoshi). 5.1cm (2in).
