An ebony netsuke of a centipede on driftwood
By Hayashi Gendo, Iwami Province, dated 1789
The centipede crawling around and over a section of striated and weathered driftwood of irregular form, its body and the underside of the wood polished, signed with ukibori characters Kansei gan tsuchinoto-tori toshi Sekiyo Kohoku Hayashi Gendo kore o horu (carved by Hayashi Gendo of Kohoku in Sekiyo in the first, tsuchinoto-tori, year of Kansei [1789]). 6.6cm (2 5/8in).
