An ebony netsuke of the Bunbuku Chagama (badger tea-kettle)
By Bokugyuken Toshiharu (died 1859), Hakata, Chikuzen Province, mid-19th century
The badger shown curled in a ball, imitating a tea kettle, its head lowered and flanked by its two forelegs and tail beneath, the removable cover of the kettle forming the himotoshi, the upper part variously textured to simulate fur and iron, signed in a sunken rectangular reserve Bokugyuken. 4.8cm (1 7/8in).
