An umimatsu (sea-pine) netsuke of a centipede

By Kanman (1793-1859), Iwami Province, early 19th century
A bifurcated section of rotting wood carved in relief with a centipede walking over one side, its body and legs finely carved and cleverly utilising the varied tone of the umimatsu, signed Iwami-no-kuni Kanman to (carved by Kanman in Iwami Province) with a kao. 5.3cm (2 1/8in).
