An umimatsu (sea-pine) netsuke of a centipede on a branch

By Kanman (1793-1859), Iwami Province, early 19th century
The large centipede making its way around and through the ancient wood, the wood bearing a distinct grain, the centipede's body and legs highly polished to accent the characteristic patina of the umimatsu, signed Kanman saku (made by Kanman) with a kao. 8.5cm (3 3/8in).
