By Kanman (1793-1859), Iwami Province, early 19th century
Almost completely enveloped within its carapace, its legs drawn in, forming a compact composition, the eyes inlaid in crystal and dark horn, the himotoshi formed by the central section of the carapace, signed Iwami-no-kuni Kanman to (carved by Kanman in Iwami Province) with a kao. 5.7cm (2¼in).
