A wood netsuke of a cicada on driftwood
By Kanman (1793-1859), Iwami Province, early 19th century
The wood probably ebony, the large insect alighting on the layered section of driftwood, carved in high relief, the wings and legs undercut, the whole meticulously rendered and with indentations representing rotten sections of the wood, signed Iwami-no-kuni Kanman to (carved by Kanman in Iwami Province) with a kao. 9.2cm (3 5/8in).
