Rhodochrosite on Matrix

04-15 Pocket, Tetrahedrite Drift, Sweet Home Mine, Alma, Colorado
This attractive specimen was recovered at the Sweet Home Mine in 2004, just weeks prior to the permanent closure of the locality in October of that year. The rhodochrosite crystals on this specimen exhibit the cherry-red color for which specimens from the Sweet Home Mine are so widely acclaimed. The piece features numerous, gemmy to translucent, moderately lustrous to frosted cherry-red rhombohedral crystals of rhodochroiste measuring up to 2 cm on the edge which have grown on a matrix sprinkled with sulfide minerals and needle-like quartz crytsals. Rhodochrosite is the State mineral of Colorado. Measuring 4 1/4 x 2 3/4 x 1 1/4in (10.5 x 7 x 3.4cm)
