Footnotes

Provenance:
Property of a European Nobleman, sold by Sotheby's London, 17 June 1986, lot 213;
With Winifred Williams, London;
Anon. sale, Christie's London, 22 June 1992, lot 110

Pieces from three similarly decorated tea and coffee services, including two such lobed teapot stands, are published by U. Pietsch, Phantastische Welten (2014), nos. 12-22. The borders differ slightly and the present lot is evidence of a fourth service in this style. With the exception of a teabowl and saucer (no. 23), all are in museum collections. Pietsch (p.118) considers all to be early works by Adam Friedrich von Löwenfinck, though he allows for the possibility that other painters were involved.
