A rare Meissen fluted circular dish from the Japanese Palace, circa 1730

The deep sides crisply moulded with chrysanthemum flutes, painted in Kakiemon style with two birds on a tall flowering stem growing from 'banded hedges', a further bird in flight, the rim edged in brown enamel, 25cm diam., crossed swords mark in blue enamel, Japanese Palace inventory number N=48-/ w

The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace records under no. 48: 'Fünf Stück detto [runde gemuschelte Schaalen], tief gemuschelt, mit braunem Rand, Vögeln und bunten Blumen gemahlet, 2 3/4/ Zoll tief, 10 3/4. Zoll in Diam: 2. St. haben Riße' [five ditto (round lobed dishes), deeply lobed, painted with brown rim, birds amd coloured flowers, 2 3/4 Zoll deep, 10 3/4 Zoll in diam: 2 pieces have cracks] (quoted by Claus Boltz, Japanisches Palais-Inventar 1770 und Turmzimmer-Inventar 1769, in Keramos 153 (1996), p. 73).
