A rare pair of Meissen bottles, circa 1725

Of simple pear shape on small, slightly-domed bases, both finely painted in black monochrome with continuous Kauffahrtei scenes of merchants and their wares by a quayside, one with two figures unloading a small sailing vessel beside a ruined tower, elaborate borders of gilt scrollwork around the bases and below the narrow necks, 11.8cm and 12cm high (covers missing) (2)

Footnotes

This form is of great rarity: four such bottles painted with continuous chinoiserie scenes were in the historic collections of the Margraves and Grand Dukes of Baden, now Schloss Favorite (U. Grimm/W. Wiese, Was bleibt (1996), p.65); two bottles decorated in Augsburg with gilt chinoiserie vignettes enclosed by strap- and scrollwork are in the Arnhold Collection, New York (M. Cassidy-Geiger, The Arnhold Collection of Meissen Porcelain 1710-50 (2008), no. 280).
