A Meissen Augsburg Hausmaler-decorated tea canister and cover, circa 1725

Of hexagonal shape, decorated in the Seuter workshop and attributed to Abraham Seuter, with alternate panels, three painted in colours with scenes of Dutch peasants in the style of van Ostade, two panels with a single seated toper, the third with a woman and two men playing cards, gilt scroll motifs beneath each scene, the panels separated by solid gold panels with burnished floral borders, the cover painted with a further Dutch peasant, half-length within the circular reserve, 9.9cm high (2)

Abraham Seuter specialised in groups of figures after Watteau and Lancret, many taken from the comedies of Molière. In the case of the present lot, the likely source will be prints of Dutch peasants in interiors after Adriaen van Ostade.
