Two very rare early Meissen Hausmaler beakers, the porcelain circa 1715-20, the decoration slightly later

Painted with continuous landscape scenes depicting mythological subjects, one with Europa and the bull, the other with Neptune on a chariot pulled by hippocampi, the interior rims with wide gilt borders, 6.5cm high (2)

Footnotes

Provenance:
The Neptune beaker sold at Sotheby's London, 23 June 1993, lot 135;
The Europa beaker sold at Phillips London, 1 December 1993, lot 62

The fine decororation and classical subject matter of these beakers has been associated with Ignaz Bottengruber. Some details, such as the treatment of the clouds, and the unusual gilt borders inside the rims, could suggest a so far unidentified Hausmaler (or workshop), perhaps in Bayreuth, that has thus far only been associated with monochrome decoration (dubbed the "Indian Ink" painter); see S. Kuhn, The Hausmaler, in M. Chilton/C. Lehner-Jobst (eds.), Fired by Passion, vol. I (2009), pp. 543-544.
