BURDEN, WILLIAM A.M. 1906-1984.

[AVIATION BIBLIOGRAPHY.] Typescript, being a listing of printed resources on aeronautics and aviation, dated 1933, 4to, 140pp, with alphabetical section tabs on outside page edges, maroon cloth, gilt titles on spine. Stains and soiling to covers, pages toned.

A fascinating bibliographical listing on aeronautics assembled by the great aviation expert William Burden. Burden was a prominent banker, philanthropist, diplomat, and aviation expert. While attending Harvard, he also took aviation courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and after his graduation in 1927, he worked as an aviation research analyst at Brown Brothers and Harriman. He later served on the board of directors of United Airlines, and during World War II he oversaw the Civil Aeronautics Authority, and became Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Air. He was a founding adviser to the National Aeronautics and Space Council, which established NASA in 1959, until he left that position to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium. Here he has assembled an exhaustive listing of published works related to aeronautics and aviation, from 18th century works on ballooning to the explosion of information that became available during and after World War I.
