[SCHÜTTE, JOHANN. 1873-1940.]

HARDESTY, FREDERICK S. Key to the Development of the Super-Airship Luftfahrzuegbau Schütte-Lanz. New York: privately published, 1930. 4to. 198 pp, recto only. Mimeographed text. Black patterned cloth, gilt titles on upper cover, metal hinge with 3-hole binding posts.

Report on Schütte-Lanz airships, covering their development and construction from 1909 to 1930, prepared by Johann Schütte's American representative, Frederick S. Hardesty. Eager to sell his airships in the U.S., Schütte met with Billy Mitchell and then Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt, trying to gain their interest. He also met with Goodyear executives, but found the Americans either ignorant or indifferent to his enthusiasm about the future of airships. Roosevelt, however, was receptive to the idea, and had planned to become an aviation business tycoon in the airship business. His plans changed after being stricken with polio and simultaneously encouraged to try again for political office.
