DEYONG, JOE. 1894-1975.

Archive of sketches and correspondence related to Western Artist Joe De Yong, comprising:
1. 29 pencil sketches on paper, 107 x 170 mm and smaller, depicting scenes in New Mexico, most with captions, a few mounted on card.
2. Approximately 30 letters to Joe DeYong, and a typed copy of a letter from DeYong, mostly regarding the publication of his book on artist Charles M. Russell. Correspondents include artist Will James, author James H. Cook, and Charles Russell's widow, Nancy, among others.
3. Assorted ephemera including newspaper clippings, photostatic copies of images from other artists including Russell and C.B. Green, and a telegram from DeYong's mother regarding a family funeral.

Joe DeYong was a western painter and sculptor who learned the skills of a cowboy in his youth, and applied them as a cattle handler and bit player for Tom Mix movies. He was stricken with spinal meningitis in 1913, causing him to lose his hearing. However, he corresponded with Charles Russell, communicating through the use of sign language, and worked in his studio from 1916 until Russell's death in 1926. He worked extensively in the movies, primarily as a consultant for Cecil B. DeMille, and lent his eye for the authentic look of the Old West to films such as The Plainsman, Red River, and Shane.
