KETTLEWELL, FRANK. 1889-1969.

Lot of 30 original cartoon drawings, ink on artist's board, most 408 x 404 mm, signed "Ket" with a signature bird character appearing somewhere in each image, compositor's pencil marks, some soiling, a few with foxing and chipping to corners.

Lampooning local and international politics and society, Kettlewell produced these cartoons for publication in the Oakland Tribune. Joining the staff in 1912, he rose quickly to become chief of the Tribune's Art Department. He also submitted a drawing of Sutter's Mill that was adapted by the U.S. Post Office into a 1949 Gold Rush commemorative stamp. These images cover issues from just before the U.S. entry into World War I (such as submarine threats to U.S. shipping), to the rise of Nazi Germany.
