JEFFERSON, JOSEPH. 1829-1905.

Archive of seven playbills (including one for a 1974 revival of Rip Van Winkle at Sunnyside, N. Y.), miscellaneous clippings, framed theater poster of Rip Van Winkle, and framed 1897 Howard Chandler Christy color lithograph of J. Jefferson as "Rip Van Winkle" (signed and dated by the actor in ink, November 16, 1901). Various sizes. Playbills incomplete and frayed; tears in poster closed.

Just as James O'Neill was forever linked with the role of the "Count of Monte Cristo" and Carol Channing with that of "Dolly Levi," Joseph Jefferson was the eternal "Rip Van Winkle." He first took the part of the famous Washington Irving character in his own dramatization of the classic tale in 1859 and continued to play him for the next 40 years both in America and abroad. He also appeared as "Rip" in the earliest filmed version of the story in 1896. His son Thomas Jefferson recreated the character in several early 20th-century movies.
