BOOTH FAMILY.

Archive of a carte-de-visite of John Wilkes Booth, signed photographs of Edwin Booth and Helena Modjeska in Richelieu, signed photograph of William F. Leggett, Jr. (a. k. a. "W. Booth Leggett"), miscellaneous clippings on Junius and Edwin Booth, and two framed prints of Edwin Booth. Various sizes.

Brothers Junius Brutus Booth Jr. (1821-1883), Edwin Thomas Booth (1833-1893) and John Wilkes Booth (1838-1865) with their father Junius Brutus Booth Sr. (1796-1852) formed the first family of the American Stage up to and including the Civil War. But after John Wilkes assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, Edwin Booth struggled to prove himself to be not only a great Shakespearean actor but also a patriotic American. He became famous for his "hundred nights Hamlet," the longest running production of the play in America during the 19th century. Included is a framed program for another performance of Hamlet on November 16, 1878. Another important role for Edwin Booth was that of the French cardinal in Richelieu in which he costarred with famous Polish actress Helena Modjeska (1840-1909) in 1878. John Wilkes Booth is identified in ink beneath the photograph in an unknown hand. Actor William F. Leggett Jr. looked so much like Edwin Booth, though no relation, that he went by the name "W. Booth Leggett."
