BARRYMORE FAMILY.

Archive of a framed signed photograph of Ethel Barrymore, a signed photograph of John Drew Jr., ten flyers and playbills with one for Barrymore signed by Christopher Plummer, and miscellaneous clippings. Various sizes and condition.

The Barrymores in their day were considered to be "The Royal Family of Broadway" as parodied by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber in their 1927 comedy of the same name. This theatrical dynasty was established by Irish-American actor John Drew (1827-1862) after he emigrated to the USA and began appearing on the New York stage in 1846. He was followed by his son John Drew Jr. (1853-1927), the uncle of the famous Lionel (1878-1954), Ethel (1879-1959), and John Barrymore (1882-1942). Today remembered primarily for their film roles, each of the Barrymores was a theatrical legend long before heading to Hollywood. Only once did all three Barrymores perform together, in MGM's Rasputin and the Empress (1932). John Barrymore became the greatest Hamlet of his generation and surpassed Edwin Booth's record of 100 performances by one. Barrymore was a 1996 two-character drama based on the last days of alcoholic John Barrymore starring Christopher Plummer, who received the Tony for this performance.
