BELCHER, GEORGE FREDERICK ARTHUR. 1875-1947.

Original charcoal sketch, "Charlady: 'Well, mum, what I sez is, why need they put tea up? Why couldn't they tax whitewash, or something else that folks could do without?'" charcoal and pencil cartoon for Punch (1932, p. 485), 385 x 355 mm, signed in charcoal on the lower left with the legend in pencil beneath the drawing, matted and framed.

G. F. Belcher was a well-known English cartoonist, as well as a gifted etcher, painter, and Royal Academician. He became a regular contributor to Punch in 1911. He often drew the London working classes in the spirit of Phil May's earlier cartoons. "My father introduced me to him," Mr. Knight says, "... a great artist."
