AN ORIGINAL HILARY KNIGHT WATERCOLOR,"Captain Boldheart...gave the word to board."

A finished watercolor and ink illustration for Charles Dickens' "Captain Boldheart" and "The Magic Fishbone," (New York: Macmillan, 1964), 240 x 160 mm.

"Captain Boldheart" and "The Magic Fishbone" were originally part of the little known Holiday Romance, the only juvenile fiction Charles Dickens published in his lifetime. Michael di Capua of Macmillan was editing a series of children's classics, many with new illustrations by prominent artists and commentary by bestselling writers. "Captain Boldheart" and "The Magic Fishbone" were originally part of this series, but it was delayed because it took so long for Mary McCarthy to supply her foreword. This alarming picture is an homage to Rockwell Kent's illustrations depicting the various atrocities in Voltaire's Candide (1928) that so fascinated Mr. Knight when he was a boy.
