AN ORIGINAL HILARY KNIGHT COLLAGE PORTRAIT OF KAY THOMPSON, "THE MOTHER OF ELOISE."

Plywood cutout with Richard Avedon photograph, black sequin top, Eloise decorated black flannel and tulle skirt with coq feather fan, 1440 x 670 mm, minor wear.

D. D. Dixon and Hilary Knight were neighbors when she was Richard Avedon's assistant. She asked if she could borrow a feather fan Mr. Knight had designed and use it in a photo shoot of Kay Thompson. The two creators of Eloise did not finally meet until Ms. Dixon took Mr. Knight to watch Ms. Thompson perform in the Persian Room of The Plaza Hotel. This fanciful plywood figure was assembled for the exhibition "Hilary Knight's Stage Struck World" at The New York Public Library at Lincoln Center, April 25 through September 1, 2017. The skirt was made for Phoebe Legere to wear at the Pink and Black Ball at The Plaza, October 12, 1999.
