A Margaret Mitchell autograph letter signed pertaining to the ending of Gone With the Wind

Typed Letter Signed ("Margaret Mitchell"), 1 p, 4to, Atlanta, November 17, 1936, to Frances Hjort, on personal letterhead, with original typed transmittal envelope. Mitchell answers what must have been the question she was asked more than any other after Gone With the Wind was published in 1936: did Rhett and Scarlett get back together? In this letter, she keeps her secrets close to the chest: "I wish I could settle the question for you about whether Rhett 'risked his heart a third time' but I do not know any more about what happened to him after the last page than any reader does. I never thought about it at all and when I try to think about it, I don't know."
Provenance: the collection of Tom Heyes.
7 x 11 in.
