S.H. McGarry, Honoring The Western Tradition: The L.D. "Brink" Brinkman Collection, Kerrville, Texas, 2003, pp. 161, 296, illustrated.
S. H. McGarry wrote of the present work in Honoring The Western Tradition: The L.D. "Brink" Brinkman Collection, Hopi Piki Bread and the small grouping of interior scenes rarely produced by the artist "combine dramatic lighting with intimate moments and still-life compositions, such as the foreground grouping of pots and wood."1 The artist maintained a fondness and respect for the Native American people of the West, who were pictured as the many subjects of his work, McGarry continues, "Ray Swanson's background growing up on a farm influences the themes he seeks out in his paintings: Work - hands-on, grueling and rewarding - is the underpinning of the stories he tells." 2
