A fine and rare gilt brass and coromandel "Mortar" timepiece
Thomas Cole, London, no. 1658, retailed by London & Ryder
Date: second quarter 19th century
Movement: Eight day with going barrel, frosted gilt lever platform escapement to a monometallic balance
Dial: Silvered, in the form of a cannon ball mounted in the muzzle with painted Roman chapter and minute rings enclosing an engraved rosette in the center, blued hands
Case: The gilt brass barrel finely engraved with a trophy of arms, mounted by gilt straps on a shaped molded coromandel base
Size: The base 12 in (30.5cm) long, the muzzle 4 ½ in (11.5cm) diam.
Date: second quarter 19th century
