The present work was painted in the same year as Lavery's painting Elswick, in the colleion of the Imperial War Museum, which depicts a mass of women working away in a munitions factory. Much like Elswick, The Disc Maker highlights a country and indeed a population intensely preoccupied with preparations for the war effort. It also highlights the toil and commitment of women to the war effort, something Lavery shone a light on that was not well documented previously. The busy haziness of the composition and the focus on a couple of figures, rather than a whole factory, perfectly illustrates the feverish nature of the individuals unwavering devotion to the cause.
