'Epstein's second and last head of himself, Self Portrait with a Beard, was made in this year. Modelled during a period of doubt and depression for the artist, this work projects something of his misanthropic state of mind. It has the haunted look of Van Gogh's self-portraits and the rough surface seems in keeping with the violent mood of the subject.'
