A SMALL FULL-SIZE BOX TABLE ENGINE, Ferrabee of Stroud, circa 1855,

the cylinder is 2¼in bore x 4in stroke, has integrally cast steam passage and valve face with shaped cylinder cover. The two-part valve chest is driven via a rocking lever shaft, running in bearings integrally cast with external steam passages fixed to the entablature. The rocking lever is driven by a yoked eccentric pushrod. The adjustable governor butterfly valve is driven by a Watt-type governor, with central spindle swivel counterbalance weight and rocker, with a pedestal which straddles the crankshaft. Connecting rods are driven by the crosshead running on bar-type guides surmounted by a Gothic spreader. The crankshaft is driven by a connecting rod and carries a flywheel, eccentric and crank-driven feed pump. The entablature is supported on a box bed with mouldings and brass beaded oval openings, unique to Ferrabee. Finished in green black and polished brightwork. Original oak plinth, 30½in (77.5cm) high, 24in (61cm) wide

Footnotes

Ferrabees of Stroud were typical of the many semi-rural engineering companies which produced a remarkable range of items and installation and maintenance services during the middle of the 19th century. Examples of their engines can be found illustrated in "A Treatise on the Steam Engine" by John Bourne. Amongst their many products, they were the first to produce the cylinder lawnmower.

Provenance:
Property of The British Engineerium, Hove.
