A French Small-Sword With Gold-Encrusted Hilt
Mid-18th Century

With sharply tapering blade of hollow triangular section (extreme tip pitted) etched over its entire length on both sides with symmetrical designs of strapwork, foliate motifs, baskets of fruit and drapery, all against hatched gilt grounds, russet steel hilt retaining traces of original blueing and encrusted overall with chased scallop shells and flowering foliage inhabited by Classical figures and martial trophies, all within beaded gold line borders, and comprising double shell-guard, arms, lobed rear quillon, knuckle-guard, globular pommel with button, and swelling spirally-grooved grip
