Potted landscapes of this form were made for the viewing enjoyment of the emperor and his concubines within the living quarters of the Imperial Palace complex. The making of these landscapes required the joint effort of artisans in different media. They were made in areas such as Suzhou, Yangzhou and Guangzhou where the best material and crafts were employed to produce the highest quality potted landscapes. For reference see a pair of potted landscapes in situ illustrated in Life in the Forbidden City, Hong Kong, 1985, pl. 78.
Compare with a series of miniature gardens made of semi-precious stones planted in jardinieres included in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Gugong Zhenbao, 2004, pp. 199-203.
A closely related potted landscape on painted enamel basin was included in the exhibition Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1987, cat.no. 58.
