Footnotes

The present lot probably shows a scene from the 水滸傳 shuihu zhuan or The Water Margin (also known as Outlaws of the Marsh), a 14th century vernacular novel by Shi Nai'an. We see Li Kui, the ferocious warrior nicknamed Black Whirlwind, approaching a broken flag pole, with an associate holding him back.
