A pair of painted pottery figures of tomb guardians

Tang Dynasty
Each ferocious warrior modelled standing in full battle armour with a helmet, breastplate and shield, the right hand positioned to hold an implement, the faces with bristling beards, bulging eyes and stern lips, cold painted with red and white pigments.
Each: 45cm (17 3/4in) high (2).

Provenance: a Swedish private collection, acquired in the early 20th century

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no.C118e44 dated 29 May 2018, is consistent with the dating of this lot.
