Extensively inscribed on the canvas verso as follows:
'The Wild Deer was built on the Clyde by Charles Commill and launched in December 1863. Her Captain - George Cobb [-] took her straight from the stocks and made some quite remarkable passages - on one occasion he made London from Shanghai in 98 days.
In her late years the Wild Deer ----taking people out to Australia and New Zealand.
Her end came in 1883 when in bad January weather she was wrecked off the Irish coast with her 200 people on board.
