A late 18th century Ackworth School darning sampler by Anna Hart, dated 1797

inscribed 'Anna Hart, Ackworth School, 1797', damask darning in black and cream silk on linen ground, later framed, 23cm x 21.5cm, overall 25cm x 23.5 framed

Footnotes

Anna Hart was born on 6th April 1785, she was nine years old when she went to Ackworth on the 17th November 1794. According to the admission book, she left the school on the 4th of December 1797 'by coach from Wentbridge.' Wentbridge is a village on the great north road and the closest joining point to the school.

Anna's five siblings also attended Ackworth. William and George joined the school in 1780. William left in 1782 and George in 1783. Thomas and Mary both joined in 1786 and left in 1790. Anna and her sister, Lucy, joined in 1794 and left in 1797.

Their parents William and Mary Hart lived in Hardingham in Norfolk. Hardingham is five miles North West of Wymondham, which is a market town nine miles South West of Norwich, and which was the location of their Monthly Meeting.

It is probable that Mr and Mrs felt happier allowing their children to travel in twos over such a long distance and at such a young age, by stage coach. The agent for the children was Simon Bale -he acted as a link between the school and parents and would vouch for the family.

A similar sampler signed by Mary Coleby and dated 1798 was sold at Bonhams Knowle in 26th July 2011, as lot 270 for £3400 hammer.
