A Regency gilt bronze figural mantel timepiece depicting the allegory of love

the movement signed F Batens, Gerrard Street, London
the canted rectangular case surmounted by a terrestrial globe finial and flanked by a seated classic maiden beside a harp and stack of books, one inscribed 'l'art d'aimer d'Ovide', the oval base on toupie feet, the brass movement with single chain fusee, pendulum and key, 32cm high

Ovid (43BC to 17AD) was a Roman poet renowned for his works such as the Heroides and Ars Amatoria. His work, the 'Metamorphoses,' was a fifteen book catalogue of poetry based on Greek and Roman myths.
