The present work was one of twenty-eight works acquired by the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum with a bequest from Alice Skae in 1916, established for California art. The work was described as 'one of his characteristic night studies in deeply luminous tones of blue with dusky shadows and the inevitable point of sharply brilliant yellow light that gives vividness to the picture.' 1
