FIRST EDITION of this 3-part article on the Harvard Mark I, IBM's Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, an electromechanical computer first used for the Manhattan Project on March 29, 1944 to run a John von Neumann program. In 1936, Howard Aiken, then still pursuing his doctorate, presented IBM his concept for the Mark I and company chairman Thomas Watson Sr. personally approved the project.
