A PAIR OF PORTRAITS OF GEORGE AND MARTHA WASHINGTON.

[After Gilbert Stuart.] A matched pair of George and Martha Washington portraits. [Philadelphia?: First quarter of the 19th century.]
Oil on canvas, canvas 14 x 16.5 inches, set in near-contemporary oval gilt frames, light craquelure to the surface of the canvas, remnants of labels on verso.
Provenance: Messmore Kendall (1872-1959) of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; by descent to his Grand-Daughter, Sue Kendall Wallingford; Sold to the present owner in 1970.

A fine pair of Federalist period portraits of the first President of the United States and his wife Martha, collected by Messmore Kendall, who created one of the finest collections of Washingtoniana in the US. The early 19th century was a time when there was a vogue for matching George and Martha portraits, and various artists in Philadelphia and New York were copying Gilbert Stuart, and producing portraits such as this.
