EARLY GEORGE WASHINGTON ENGRAVING.

CAMPBELL, ALEXANDER, artist. George Washington, Esqr. General and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, in America. [London]: C. Shepherd, September 1775.
Mezzotint on paper, 347 x 249 mm, matted, trimmed close to platemark, a few stray marks, but an excellent example.

Among the earliest prints of Washington, who commented when shown the print by his wife: "Mr. Campbell whom I never saw (to my knowledge) has made a very formidable figure of the Commander in Chief giving him a sufficient portion of Terror in his Countenance."
