WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL ADDRESS.

Address of the Late General George Washington, to the Citizens of the United States, on declining a re-election to the Office of President. Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, September 17, 1796.
Printed broadside, xx by xx mm. Closed tear repair to upper right margin affecting some text, toning and offset. Framed to xx by xx.

Washington declines further office, establishing the two-term limit precedent that would not be codified until 1947. His farewell address, penned with the help of Alexander Hamilton, sets forth a vision for the American project that would be largely adopted as the Federalist platform. Washington encourages unity and warns against sectionalism as well as the dangers of foreign influence and political parties; he applauds economic freedom and credit, but cautions against excessive government debt. A foundational document of American political thought.

Saleroom notices

The closed tear in the upper right corner actually is the edge of a supplied pen-and-ink facsimile of the upper right sliver of the broadside.
